Since 1996, the UW CSE Professional Master’s Program (PMP) has provided an opportunity for Seattle area software professionals to take their knowledge to a new level while continuing to work. Over 120 students are currently enrolled in the PMP, and 50 new students enter the program each year. Over 85 percent of students who enter the program successfully complete the program to earn their master’s degree. To date more than 200 software professionals have earned their master's degree through the PMP.
A legacy of qualityFor the past two decades, the UW Department of Computer Science & Engineering has consistently been ranked among the top 10 computer science and computer engineering departments in the country. Professional Master’s Program courses are instructed by the department’s award-winning faculty who are at the forefront of their respective research areas. PMP students consistently rate their instructors extremely high for quality of instruction.PMP faculty bring their cutting-edge research to the classroom so you can apply it to your professional products and projects, providing a body of knowledge that goes beyond what you acquired in your undergraduate studies and professional career. Courses cover a broad range of topics in computer science including applications of artificial intelligence, computer graphics, programming languages, operating systems, digital systems, software engineering, human computer interaction, algorithms and more. Students in the part-time Professionals Master’s Program earn the same degree (Master’s of Science in Computer Science & Engineering) as those who complete the CSE full-time program. The Professional Master’s Program is designed for students whose primary interest is in continuing on their professional technical path while acquiring skills to move them in to positions and projects of greater responsibility and impact. The full-time program is designed for students who want to follow faculty into academic or industrial research.
Designed to meet your needsTo accommodate your full-time work schedule, courses are offered one evening per week on the UW campus in the new Paul G. Allen Center for Computing & Engineering, and in some instances are teleconferenced locally to Microsoft. (Microsoft employees can look here to find out more about our Microsoft connection.) The department realizes that you may find it hard to fulfill your work obligations while pursuing your master’s degree so a generous leave policy exists that allows you to take a break from your studies without losing your place in the program.Your pathway through the Professional Master’s Program has many course options. To satisfy the 40 credits required to earn the degree, you must successfully complete eight PMP courses and eight additional credits. Students generally earn these additional credits through participation in the colloquium series, which feature talks by leading-edge researchers in computer science from throughout the world. Attend the series in person or view it on UWTV or via the Web. Students typically take one course per quarter, plus one credit of colloquium, to complete the program in two-and-a-half years. Summer courses are optional, but if taken, allow you to complete the program in two years. Tuition is paid on a quarterly basis. The annual cost is estimated to be $7,185 for Washington state residents and $14,175 for nonresidents. Many companies will reimburse students for tuition expenses. Check with your employer to learn more about tuition reimbursement.
Our studentsThe Professional Master’s Program is not a vocational program. It is designed to meet the professional aspirations of people who wish to continue on their technical path while progressing to bigger and better projects. Almost all PMP students are employed full-time as software design engineers and software developers.Students in the PMP are among the best and brightest in the Seattle area, including many international students, and are chosen for their high level of achievement and proven track records for setting and achieving demanding goals. While this is a part-time program, the commitment to complete the degree while balancing work, family and other obligations is considerable. Admission to the PMP is competitive. A bachelor’s in computer science, computer engineering or another closely related field is required as is professional experience in advance computing technology. While it is recommended that entering students have at least two years of work experience, the typical PMP student has an average of 4-6 years of work experience.
Staying connectedApproximately half of the students enrolled in the Professional Master’s Program are employed by Microsoft. Other local companies represented by students in the program include: Boeing, Google, RealNetworks, Amazon.com. AT&T, Adobe and many more.
New state-of-the-art facilitiesWhile enrolled in the program, you’ll have access to the department’s state-of-the-art new building, the Paul G. Allen Center for Computing & Engineering, which opened in September 2003 and includes more than 20,000 square feet of laboratories, 1,000 computer systems and more than 50 terabytes of storage, as well as wireless access throughout. The general-purpose laboratories support a diverse set of hardware and software required for a cutting-edge education. CSE special-purpose laboratories provide tailored support for activities such as mobile robotics, computer graphics, digital design, motion capture, embedded systems, laser scanning, educational technology, networking and artificial intelligence.PMP Students also have access to the UW Engineering Library, one of the best engineering resources on the West coast, as well as to Husky sporting events, the UW Intramural Activities Building, and other campus clubs, libraries, resources and facilities.
